Could we prevent or delay Alzheimer’s before symptoms begin?

Researchers are investigating whether a medicine could help prevent or delay the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

We’re looking for people aged 55–80 who are not experiencing any significant memory or thinking problems to take part in the PrevenTRON study at our Aberdeen or Edinburgh research sites.

Could you be eligible?

You may be suitable if you:

  • Are aged 55–80
  • Are currently well, with no memory or thinking problems
  • Have no diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment or dementia
  • Have a study partner who knows you well and can answer questions about how you’re getting on day to day

If you’re aged 55–64

You will also need at least one of the following to be eligible:

  • A parent or sibling who developed dementia.
  • Be a carrier of the APOE4 gene
  • Previous test results showing changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease

If you’re aged 65–80

You do not need to have a family history of dementia to register your interest.

Not sure if you qualify?

That’s OK. You don’t need to know whether you’re eligible before registering your interest.

About the study

Alzheimer’s disease can begin developing in the brain many years before symptoms such as memory and thinking problems appear. The PrevenTRON study is investigating whether an investigational medicine could help delay or prevent the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers do not yet know whether the treatment will work. Roche is the study sponsor.

The PrevenTRON study is taking place at our research sites at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh and the ONE BioHub in Aberdeen.

Your choice

Registering interest does not commit you to anything. You can take time to decide after speaking with our team.

What happens after you register

If you register your interest, a member of our research team will call you to:

  • Ask some additional questions about your health and circumstances
  • Answer any questions you may have
  • Check whether you may be suitable for a screening visit

You will receive more information about the study before making any decision about taking part.

If you are eligible, you’ll be invited for a screening visit. Being invited for screening does not mean you will be enrolled in the study. The screening process helps us establish whether the study is suitable for you.
